Google who is facing antitrust Investigation by CCI (Competition Commission of India) in India has been fined $166000 or Rs 10 million for the failure to supply the document and information in ongoing investigation.
“The order was passed on a reference made by the DG to CCI alleging inter alia non-cooperation by Google in the pending investigations,” said a CCI spokesperson.
A Google spokesperson, stated, “We’re disappointed by this development. While we are confident that our products are compliant with competition law in India, we continue to cooperate fully with the Competition Commission of India’s extensive and ongoing investigation. We’ve not yet received this procedural order, but will review it fully once we have.”
The investigation was initiated after the complaint by Bharat Matrimony and customer utility and trust society that Google is using its dominant position in web and web advertisement market as search engine and pushing its service forward and promoting the services of the companies that are willing to shred more bucks to be promoted.
In past Google has been facing the same case across the world in several countries but has been by the investigations has been settled without any conviction, yet the practices of the internet giant has been remain in scrutiny for quite some time now. For instance in 2013 an antitrust review by Federal trade commission of USA was closed after Google voluntarily agreed to make two changes to its search and AdWords business.
